Painted from a photo I took of the temple in Kyoto. I’ve been to Kinkakuji twice; once in 2016 and again in 2019. Both times were in Fall, and there were gorgeous Japanese maples turning bright red on the path that leads to the building and pond. I was lucky to have perfect weather both times I went, under which the vibrant gold leaf of the temple contrasts beautifully with the blue sky. Even more amazing are the deep rich orange tones just under the roof, as the reflected light from the pond illuminates the rafters. Absolutely a must see if you visit Japan. Not to mention, the Ho-oh ornamentation perched at the top makes Pokémon mythology feel alive 😜
Inspired by shin-hanga prints. There were a few old woodblock prints done of Kinkakuji in the past, but I feel they weren’t able to capture the striking vibrancy of the gold leaf, which is what I sought to do here.
The script reads:
金閣寺: “Kinkakuji” (The Golden Pavillion)
